Peter Campbell, MD
F.A.C.E., F.A.C.P.

Dr. Campbell was born and raised in Great Britain. He received his undergraduate training at Oxford University where he met his future wife Sandy, an American exchange student. After a wedding in Minnesota, the Campbell’s returned to the United Kingdom. Dr. Campbell obtained his medical degree from the University of London, after which he completed Internal Medicine training in London, Sheffield, and Aberdeen, Scotland. In the early 1980's, the Campbell family returned to Minnesota for Dr. Campbell to obtain Fellowship training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Mayo Clinic.

 

Dr. Campbell was a faculty member of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville for a decade prior to coming to Knoxville in 1996. He was an Investigator in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) that established conclusively the benefits of intensive insulin therapy for diabetic patients. His other research interests were obesity and fat metabolism, and the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes, on which he has published more than thirty original papers and book chapters. Dr. Campbell is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology, a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the Endocrine Society.

 

The Campbell’s have three grown children and three grandchildren. They enjoy travel, theater, opera and the outdoors.  Dr. Campbell’s latest challenge is learning French.
